Lumens are the number everyone advertises and the one that matters least. Here is what actually determines whether a light survives a season.

You can buy a 22-inch light bar for $40 or for $400, and the listings will quote suspiciously similar lumen figures. The difference is not brightness. It is whether the thing still works in November.

Lumens Are Mostly Theater

Advertised lumens are usually raw lumens — the theoretical output of the bare diodes — not effective lumens measured out the front of the assembled housing. Optics, lens, and thermal losses eat a large fraction of that.

Worse, raw lumen claims on the cheap end are frequently just made up. There is no enforcement. Two bars claiming 20,000 lumens can differ by a factor of three in real output.

If a manufacturer publishes effective lumens, or better yet a lux figure at a stated distance, that is a company doing real measurement. Treat it as a signal about everything else they build.

The Spec That Actually Predicts Survival

Is the circuit board potted?

Potting means the electronics are encapsulated in resin. On a machine, the enemy is not water so much as vibration — thousands of hours of washboard walking a solder joint until it fractures. A potted board cannot vibrate. An unpotted one can, and eventually does.

This is the single biggest difference between a light that lasts five seasons and one that dies in six months, and almost nobody advertises it. Ask.

Sealing: IP68 and the Breather

IP68 means dust-tight and submersible. That is the number you want, especially if you pressure wash — and everyone pressure washes.

But there's a subtlety. A perfectly sealed housing still fogs internally, because trapped air holds moisture and the housing heats and cools. Good lights include a Gore-Tex style breather membrane that lets air equalize while blocking liquid water. Cheap lights skip it, and then you get condensation inside a "waterproof" light.

Housing Is the Heat Sink

LEDs fail from heat as much as anything, and in a sealed light there is nowhere for heat to go but out through the housing. That is why real off-road lights use cast or extruded aluminum with fins.

A plastic-bodied light bar is a light bar that will dim over time as the diodes cook. If you can flex the housing, put it back.

Also: check the mounting brackets. Stainless steel, ideally. Cheap bars ship with mild-steel brackets that rust apart in one wet season while the light itself is still fine.

Beam Pattern Matters More Than Output

This is where most people choose wrong.

Spot — narrow, throws distance. Great for straight fast sections, useless in corners.

Flood — wide, short. Lights up the sides of the trail and immediate foreground.

Combo — spot reflectors in the center, flood on the outboard ends. For nearly everyone riding actual trails, this is the right answer.

Then add pods mounted outboard and aimed off-axis. A light bar throws a wall of light straight ahead, which is great until you turn. Ditch lights are the difference between seeing a corner and discovering it.

Aim pods slightly down and out. Aimed straight ahead they just add glare to what your headlights already cover.

Color Temperature

5000-6000K is the practical range — neutral white, good contrast, does not look blue.

Above 6500K you are into the blue-white that looks aggressive in a parking lot and washes out badly in dust and fog. In dusty conditions, warmer light penetrates noticeably better. Some riders run amber pods specifically for dust and fog, which genuinely works.

Wire It Properly

Run the harness from the battery through the included relay, with an inline fuse. Do not tap a factory accessory circuit — most are not rated for LED inrush current, and you will pop fuses or cook a switch.

Use the lit rocker switch that comes in the kit, mount it where you can reach it with gloves on, and route wiring away from hot exhaust and pinch points at the steering stops. Zip-tie generously.

Also: It Is Probably Not Street Legal

Auxiliary LED bars are generally off-road use only, and rules vary by state and county. Most jurisdictions require them covered or switched off on public roads. Check your local regulations rather than assuming.

The Checklist

  1. Potted board? — the question that predicts longevity
  2. IP68 with a breather membrane?
  3. Cast aluminum housing, stainless brackets?
  4. Combo beam for the bar, plus pods for the corners
  5. 5000-6000K
  6. Relay and fused harness included?
  7. Ignore the lumen number unless it is effective lumens or lux at distance

Get those right and a light bar is a buy-once part. Get them wrong and it is a consumable.
